On Saturday, I paid a short visit to my parents. I delivered some groceries that my mom had asked me to get for them, and it was so good to see them. I think my dad is making some progress towards getting better, but it's very slow right now.
Last fall, my mom and dad decided to turn their screened porch into an enclosed sunroom. You can see how this room looked as a screened porch in this post from 2012. I just love how it turned out, and so do they. Thankfully, I remembered to take my camera along yesterday, so I took some pics to share on my blog.
It actually looks very similar to before, only now it has windows instead of just screens.
I love the style of windows they chose. They have mullions in the top half, but not the bottom half, which I think gives the room more of a cottage look.
The room still has most of the same decor elements from the screened porch, but some have been re-arranged to accommodate a new easy chair and...
...new television. My parents really enjoyed sitting out here last winter and watching football games on the telly. :) Being in the corner like this, the TV doesn't intrude into the room. This antique wicker table used to be in the opposite corner when the room was a porch, as seen in the picture below.
The little birds work nicely as a doorstop now. These were a Mother's Day gift from my sister and I a few years ago.
We gave her this planter for Mother's Day this year. I was so glad to find it at Steinmart, and my mom loves it.
The comfy and cheerful new chair.
I couldn't get the coloring/exposure to look right on this pic, but I wanted you to see what they use to heat and cool the room. These are great for rooms or areas where you need heat and air conditioning, but don't have ductwork installed. We would like to do this in our basement room someday. This particular model is made by Mitsubishi, and hangs above the exterior door.
The light in this room is just wonderful. I'm trying not to be envious :) but I would really love to have a room like this at our house. We love our home, but the one thing we both miss about our house in Greensboro is our sunroom. There's just no substitute for a nice sun porch on a sunny day (or even a cloudy one).
You can see the windows a bit better in this picture. My mom chose the Buffalo Check valances from Country Curtains for this room. I think they're perfect in here. Mom has been buying from Country Curtains for about 40 years now, and we both love their products.
I love the combination in this room of brick, white beadboard, and wooden floors. It's cheerful and inviting and has loads of charm.
A few final pictures --
I thought their screened porch was terrific, but the advantage of an enclosed porch is that you can use and enjoy it year-round. The fact that they have windows that open and close is a real plus, because you can still enjoy the fresh air and breezes in the spring, summer, and fall, just like a porch. Great new room, mom and dad! :)

The sun room really looks nice. We would love to put one of those units in our master suite! We've been looking at them. Glad your dad is getting better...
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI love it! The brick wall is beautiful and the embroidered table topper is so cute:@)
ReplyDeleteHi Denise,
ReplyDeleteWhat a cozy and charming sun room; I think I'd just slide into that mustard armchair, and read the day away, with the help of that lovely lamp. The brick is a beautiful complement to the white wainscoting and the warmly hued wooden floors. Thanks for sharing this wonderful redo!

What a great room.they will spend many hours there and it will be a nice place for your dad to get stronger.
ReplyDeleteThis looks great! I agree about the windows, I really like the cottage look.
ReplyDeleteFirst, I'm glad to read that your Father is making some noticeable progress in his recovery, albeit slow. I guess our bodies just like to take their sweet time! At any rate, that's good news, and I wish him the very best as he continues to work to regain full good health.
ReplyDeleteThis is a LOVELY sunroom!!! This is exactly what I would love to add to our home if a certain someone who sleeps next to me at night would just get on board! :-) I like the exposed brick and the bead board. Both really lend a "come on in and sit a spell" feel to the space. The comfortable furniture takes that a step further, and the color yellow is so cheerful that no one could possibly resist kickin' back for a bit. I especially like the valances.
You are so right...nothing is quite like the comfort and convenience of a sunroom, especially when it's a 4-season one! It's the place to just unwind and be at one's leisurely best! I know your parents are enjoying it!
What a sweet sunroom!!! There really is nothing like the charm of a sunroom for sure, and your parents' room is especially inviting. A sunroom is definitely on my wish list! Jane
ReplyDeleteWhat a cozy room for reading or watching television. I bet your parents really enjoy being there.
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job as usual with the camera. You always make our home look so pretty. Thanks, Mom
ReplyDeleteI love this cheery, happy sunroom, Denise! Buffalo checks are one of my favorite patterns. I'll bet it's wonderful for your parents to use this year round and watch TV out there. Your mom has that perfect touch to make a room cozy. That heating/cooling element is something that I've never heard of and it sounds ideal for the sunroom. Thanks for sharing their happy place and I'm so glad that your Dad is home now to enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteOh the sunny yellow and gingham is so cheery I love it!
ReplyDeleteNow that is a room I would have a hard time leaving. It is so cheerful and comfy looking. I love the checked curtains.
ReplyDeleteSunrooms are a great way to enjoy the beautiful outdoors while keeping the bugs out :). Very interesting about the heating/cooling device. I've never seen anything like that.
Glad to hear that your dad is doing better.
You are right this is a really lovely and charming room. I like the combination of the brick, bead board and
ReplyDeletewood as well, and the wicker looks very nice too.
Rooms like that with all the light are just really such a delight cause you almost feel like you are outside,
but you have the coolness of being inside in the summer and the warmth in the Winter. Very nice, and nice they let you share it with us. Hope you dad get better real soon whatever the problem is.
Blessings, Nellie
So nice and cozy, love it!!! Thanks so much for sharing at AMAZE ME MONDAY...
