A friend shared this on his Facebook page today (Thanks Shawn!) and I wanted to share it with you.
You can read Bretagne's story Here at the abc7.com website. Bretagne is the last known living search and rescue dog from 9/11 -- she has just turned 16 years old. Sixteen is a ripe old age for any dog, but especially for a larger dog like a Golden Retriever.

Doesn't she look sweet?

Bretagne and her owner, Denise Corliss, were members of Texas Task Force 1. On their first deployment, they joined nearly 100 other search and rescue dogs to find people trapped beneath the rubble of the Twin Towers. Fourteen years later, Bretagne and her owner returned to New York City at the invitation of BarkPost to celebrate Bretagne's 16th birthday.
My purpose is not to minimize or disrespect all the dedicated and dangerous search and rescue/recovery work done by humans after 9/11. There were countless brave firefighters, police officers, and all types of emergency responders who were real heroes during those dark days. However, I do think the search dogs contributed so much to those efforts, too.
Many thanks to Bretagne and Denise Corliss, for their service to the victims and families of 9/11. God Bless!
