Shark Attacks

Is everyone winding down after a busy weekend?  I don't know about where you are, but it's been super hot here -- 95° today, and it's supposed to be 97° tomorrow and 98° on Tuesday.  I am so thankful to have an air-conditioned home; I realize there are some people who have to survive without that.

I hadn't planned to post tonight, but I had to share this story with you.  Our neighbors down the street told my husband this evening that there was a shark attack on Oak Island today (the place we go every summer for vacation).  I looked it up online, and there were actually two shark attacks there today, both within two miles of each other and 90 minutes apart.  This just feels like shades of "Jaws" somehow.

A 13 year-old girl was attacked first; she has lost part of her left arm, and may lose her left leg.  The second attack involved a 16 year-old boy, and he has already lost an arm.  Both were airlifted to a nearby hospital for surgery.  You can read the complete story here: http://myfox8.com/2015/06/14/teen-boy-loses-arm-in-nc-shark-attack-second-attack-off-nc-coast-today/

I think this is so sad.  Two young people are now maimed for life, but I'm sure their families are just glad to have them alive.   Based on the extent of the injuries, there is some speculation these teens were attacked by a tiger shark (below) or a bull shark.

This is not a normal occurrence in this area, and I find it a bit unnerving.  I haven't been in the ocean for years, and I definitely won't be going in now.  Are there many shark attacks where you live?

Thanks so much for stopping by House at Forest Manor.  You all are the best.  :)

Denise

  1. OMYGOSH, GIRL...that is sooo sad and so scary. It just makes me sick to think how these kids were just having fun and now.......so so sorry.
We live on the Plains of West Texas and are hundreds of miles from an ocean. We have vacationed in the Gulf of Mexico and the water just scared me....I stayed on the beach most of the time. I love the water..am not afraid of it...sure scared of sharks, tho.
Ya'll do a different kind of vacation this year and let the ocean alone.

  2. There was one at Ocean Isle beach last Thursday too. Not as serious damage but it still happened. That's where our kids go a lot, and us too but like you I'm not in the water.

  3. Those poor children, so sad, but thankfully they are alive. My prayers that they will be able to deal with their horrible injuries.
There is no chance of being bitten by a shark in east/central Kansas.
Have a great week, Denise...and stay out of the water when you go to the beach.

  4. How frightening! I don't blame you for staying on the beach. There are no shark attacks in my corner...at least that I have ever heard of. I think sharks like warmer water.

  5. I saw the stories on the news and it really is unnerving. One of our former pastors had a sister that was attacked and killed by a shark in Hawaii. It is a little more scary when it occurs at the beaches you visit...

  7. Hi Denise, these two stories were all over the news here today. How scary and what I thought was unnerving was the mayor or police chief or somesuch person, said that no matter what they are told the people will still go in the water if they want to and so they didn't even close the beach or post 'no swimming'. What are the odds of two incidents happening so close together? What are the sharks looking for if they are coming so close to the beach.?.Take care, Judy

  8. I forgot to say that when I was in high school a girl lost her arm to a shark attack in the Monterey Bay waters. I never was one for the beach anyway but living in a beach community that seemed to be the attitude of a crazy person!! But, I'll take it..Judy

  9. I saw that on the news about the kids, Denise. It's so very sad how, how in one split second, one's life can be forever changed. Yes,their parents must be so grateful that their children's young lives were spared. May they heal spiritually, emotionally and physically.
