Biltmore House 2017 -- Flowers and Period Costumes

Happy Friday to you!  For a month with so few days, February sure is dragging by this year.  Of course, that may have something to do with the fact that it's already February 16th, and we've had very few days of sunshine in the month so far.  Even worse, the forecast calls for more of the same, ad nauseum.  😣

The winter garden (conservatory) at Biltmore April 2017.

In an effort to cheer myself up, I decided to do a post from last year's spring trip to Biltmore House.  I wrote four posts last spring and still didn't show nearly all the pictures we took.  You may recall, they were featuring a large exhibit at that time called "Designed For Drama -- Fashion From the Classics."  The clothing/costumes featured were from period pieces such as Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, The Portrait of a Lady, etc.  In the posts last year, I shared many of the gorgeous costumes displayed throughout the house.  If you'd like to see those posts, you can find them Here, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4.  I shared pictures of the kitchen and servant's dining room in Part 3, which was one of my favorite parts of the tour.  I'll share some more costumes today, along with some of the pretty flower arrangements (because I'm starting to long for spring).

This is a portrait of Edith Vanderbilt, the wife of George Vanderbilt and mistress of Biltmore.  She looks very elegant, don't you think?  I love the gorgeous flower arrangement under the painting.

I'm sharing this picture of the tapestry hall so you can see these lovely flower topiaries adorning the long refectory table.

I cropped this for a close-up shot.  These flowers above look like ranunculus to me; what do you think?

Love this urn with orchids and ivy.

I may have shared this gorgeous tea service in the Christmas candlelight tour; it really is exquisite.

The following group of pictures are costumes from the movie, Anna Karenina, starring Keira Knightley (2012).

Love this dress --

I think these carved cherubs were on one of the many mantels in the house.

More beautiful orchids from the greenhouse.

If you enjoy seeing these costumes, I'll share some more in another post.  Thank you so much for visiting here, and I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  1. Wow so much beauty- going there is on my bucket list! The dresses are so pretty. The white flower is an orchid- you can see the deep green leaves up in the urn. This has been a real roller coaster winter for us. We expect snow and gray days but we’ve had several warmups and the snow melted back so much I’m thrilled. We’ve had a few sun filled days and it sure brightens the spirit. Spring is scratching at the door- before you know it we’ll be enjoying it again!
