What Are You Reading?

Hello all!  I hope you're having a good week so far -- we're almost halfway through.

I just wondered what you might be reading these days.  While we were in Charleston, I finished reading this book --

I've read this before, and it's an easy read.  I like something relaxing and easy when we're traveling, and this book fit the bill perfectly.

Mary Stewart is probably best known for her Arthurian series, but I truly love her older books.  They were romantic mysteries, taking place in interesting locales like Provence, Corfu (Greece), Austria, Lebanon, Scotland, and England.  Many would find them too old-fashioned, but I love her descriptive way of writing.  She could make you see and feel the scenery in the stories.  Her prose was lovely without being overdone and flowery.  Rose Cottage is one of Ms. Stewart's last books, and it doesn't have the suspenseful kind of mystery found in her previous books.  No matter; I still enjoyed it very much.

Mary Stewart died at the age of 97 in 2014, and I was sad to read of it.  I had (foolishly, I'm sure) held out hope of getting one more book from her.  I discovered when she died that her birthday was September 17th, a day before mine.  :)

I'm currently reading this charming book and am thoroughly enjoying it.  Our son gave it to me for Mother's Day -- thank you Will!  I had previously heard of this; I wouldn't be surprised if I read about it on one of your blogs.  Anyway, it's a fun and beautifully-written book; I'll have to see if I can find the TV series on Netflix.  I recommend putting it on your list if you haven't already read it.

So what are you reading these days?  It's a busy time of year, and I really need to be doing yard work, but I can never resist a good book.  ;)  Thank you for stopping by and spending time with me today.  Have a great week!

Denise

  3. I haven’t read any of this author’s books so am thankful to you for a great review. I have read The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, such a great read. I also saw a couple of episodes of the series and enjoyed those too. I have just finished yet another book from Louise Penny who writes about a French-Canadian policeman, Chief Inspector Gamache. I have been a big fan for quite a while and am totally invested in all the characters. Thanks for visiting and for following. I've done the same here, would have done so before but didn't scroll down far enough. Have a great day Denise :)

  5. I'm currently reading a couple of books. An old and charming read for me Mrs. 'Arris goes to Paris. I read Mrs. 'Arris goes to Moscow on the plane ride to San Antonio. I'm also reading Bill Bryson's The Road to Little Dribbling. Fun,fun, fun.

  6. Now Ellen has made me want to read The Road to Little Dribbling. I like non-fiction best and the reviews were so much fun why wouldn't I want to read a book about a grumpy aging Boomer? Ha! I do like a cozy mystery. Are these cozy mysteries? I really enjoyed the simple stories Rosemary and Thyme on Netflix and mostly for the sweet scenes of England and also Spain and Greece and France, too, I think.

  7. All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr is the last novel I read. Excellent. You can't put it down. I loved it because it took place in France. Currently, I'm reading The Greater Journey by David McCullough about Americans in Paris from 1830-1900.
    Thanks for your recommendations.

  8. I've read books by both these authors and enjoyed them, Denise. Have just writing my second book, An Honest Home, and now that it's published, I plan to return to READING other people's books for a while. It's not just the writing that exhausts, you know: it's the constant re-reading and rewriting!! (smile) Okay, I'm done complaining. and I feel privileged to have written it. tomorrow I will go to the library and check out Rose Cottage - I love mysteries/suspense novels and I could use an easy read right now. Thank you for recommending it. Be well, Denise.

  9. I am trying to finish The Virgin Queen by Philipa Gregory. It is about a very young Queen Elizabeth I and her lover Robert Dudley. I know how the story ends. Not happily. Her historical novels tell the stories of those early queens and princesses who really did suffer at the hands of their husbands and other men who controlled them.

  10. I'm still reading my Goudge book. Even when I put it down for a time I always remember the story--and can pick right back up. That's the sign of a good writer I think. Enjoyed reading what all your commenters are reading.
