Mother Nature Calling

Hello and how was your weekend?  Ours was really nice; we had beautiful spring weather.  I felt a little like we were in our own episode of "Wild Kingdom" though.  Do you think these little guys are cute?

Yep, me too.  I encountered this little gecko when we were visiting Brookgreen Gardens in South Carolina a few years ago.  I was having fun watching him and taking pictures, and then I sat down on a chair next to the building.  Pretty soon I felt something land on my head, and I noticed the people at a nearby table were looking my way and chuckling.  Apparently, the gecko wanted a closer look at me, so he hopped onto my head.  ;)

This past weekend, I went into our bedroom to change clothes before dinner.  I have sliding doors on my bedroom closet, and when I opened one of the doors, I saw something zip away to the other end of the closet.  It looked suspiciously like a lizard tail, or heaven forbid, a snake.  Eeek!! (Which is exactly what I said, by the way)  Finally my son called, "Are you okay, mom?"  I said there's a thing in my closet -- a lizard or a snake.  My husband said it's probably a gecko, and he came to look.  He couldn't find anything, and we went to dinner.

I remembered the little critter at bedtime and expressed some concern.  My husband brushed it off, saying it wouldn't hurt me.  Well, I know that, but I didn't want to wake up and see this --

This face could be a bit startling up close and personal.

Besides, what if he wants me to switch out my auto insurance?  You never know.  The next day, my husband saw him right before he ran under hubby's nightstand.  He's still in there as far as I know.

We also had some entertainment from the avian species this weekend.

Do you see him on the side-view mirror?  My husband witnessed this episode on Saturday and when the bird showed up again on Sunday, Hal got his camera and took pictures.

Obviously, someone has seen himself in the reflection from the vehicle's window.  ;)  This bird is an Eastern Towhee, and you can read about him Here.  We see them from time to time in our yard and around the area; they're really handsome birds.  This is the male; his coloring is so striking.

From the front, he looks a bit like he's wearing a tuxedo.  :)

Now he's moved to the car.  Please excuse our pollen-covered car.  It's not being driven at the moment and needs a good wash.

And here's where he decides to go after this other male bird who's infringing on his territory.  I really hate I missed this show; birds can be so entertaining.  :-D

Have you had any Wild Kingdom experiences lately?  I'd love to hear about it.  Thanks so much for visiting and have a lovely day!

  1. Well, you already know about my wildlife encounter and I had to agree with your comment about them being more desirable outside than inside... especially your bedroom! EEK!! I have also heard that they are harmless, but I'm not sure I could sleep a wink knowing he was on the loose.
I got a kick out of your towhee story. I'm not sure if I've seen any around here. I'm going to follow your link and read up on it.

  2. If a lizard landed on my head I'd have more to say than eek!!! As a matter of fact, the video would probably go viral! I hope the little critter finds his way out of the house soon:@)

  3. Ha! Chuckling here about switching out your car insurance! Too funny. Looks like you had a fun weekend. That bird is hilarious. We enjoyed watching lots of white tailed deer this past weekend at our son's and a woodpecker. We also heard the gobble gobble of wild turkeys!

  4. Just lizards when I go out to water my garden. I am not afraid of them, they just startle me. I think I would be a little uncomfortable with the him in my bedroom.

  5. I personally don't like geckos in the house. I once stepped on one, in the dark, when headed to the bathroom one night. Eeew!! The bird is awfully pretty, though, and so colorful.

  6. No, and I hope that I don't have any with anything that "zips" and is green. Very cute, though, in Geico commercials. Is he still on the loose?
