Mabry Mill On The Blueridge Parkway

I woke up to a storm this morning -- not a snowstorm, but a thunderstorm.  I'm thinking I've heard an old wives' tale about a thunderstorm in winter, meaning snow soon to follow.  I really hope that's not the case.  It's dismal and dreary here, so I felt the need for a lighthearted post today.

Back in November of last year, hubby and I drove up to the Blue Ridge Parkway and drove all the way into Virginia.  We stopped at Mabry Mill to stretch our legs and take some pictures.  My husband took all the pictures in today's post.

The mill and restaurant were already closed for the winter season, and we almost had the place to ourselves.  Even though the buildings were closed, people could still park in the public parking area and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

The back of the mill.

The mill dates back to 1910 and was built and owned by Edwin Boston Mabry.

I wouldn't want to stub my toe on one of these (just sayin').

The mill race, or flume.

There are some other buildings on the grounds around the mill, including a blacksmith shop and an old time whiskey still.

While walking around the mill area, we were witness to a bit of "fowl play" in the duck pond.  :)

I think this picture is really funny.  :-D

Bottoms up!

Apparently, this big performance was for the benefit of the female on the bank of the pond (and possibly some of the tourists too).  I wonder if she was impressed?

This fellow was having a blast.

"Aflac!"

He looks like he's sleeping in the picture above.

Show's over.  :)

I love the sunlight shining through the archway here.

The old mill sits dreaming peacefully above its reflection on this beautiful autumn day.  Thanks for joining me on the walk around Mabry Mill.  You can read about another beautiful, old mill/hotel where we spent a week in England Here.

I'm glad you stopped by House at Forest Manor today.  During the time that I've been writing this post, the clouds have moved on and the sun has come out.  It's a gorgeous afternoon, and I think I'll get outside in the sunshine for a bit.  Do you have anything fun planned for the weekend?  I'd love to hear about it!

  1. The mill looks tranquil and lovely, dreaming of past glory days perhaps, or merely enjoying the peace after years of being productive.
The duck - too funny! He really let himself get carried away with his antics.
    Have a good weekend, Denise.

  3. Beautiful pictures and makes me homesick for Virginia. My grandfather had a mill very much like Mabry Mill, but it has been gone for many years, but I remember it well when I used to go back to the farm in the summer.
It is so beautiful up on the Blueridge Parkway. Thanks so much for bringing back some wonderful memories. That duck sure did have a lot of fun putting on that show for his girlfriend.
    Have a wonderful weekend.

  6. Looks like a beautiful, peaceful place Denise. We should stop there sometime. I saw snow for next weekend on the weather channel app but it has since been removed. Someone said that if those thunderstorms come in the cold, it means snow, but we had 60s when this (amazing) storm occurred. Who knows? Not me!

  9. Your hubby is a great photograper, Denise. I love the duck's antics that were captured. However, it's the first pic of the reflection of the mill in the water that stole my ❤️. I'm glad the sun decided to brighten your day after all. xo

  12. The old mill was a good place to poke around, lots of historical interest there. The male duck ritual was fun, but they have to be stars to attract a female, don't they!

  14. Love that silly goose Denise! And also love the mill and the grounds. It reminds me of Quebec and some of the lovely country and villages around there. I guess that would figure, wouldn't it? My country, where I live, is just a little too new, (Vancouver BC), or eons older, (Oxfordshire, UK), for this kind of scenery, but each time I go back east I try to take as much of it in as I can because I just love it so much. :) By the way, husband's such a keeper for those beautiful photos. :)

  15. You took such amazing photos! It's nice to be at places like this when there aren't a lot of people and you can really enjoy yourself and get lots of photos. When we had a motorhome, we took that drive and love the memories we made! Happy Monday my friend!
