Krispy Kreme Has A 75th Birthday

Stop the presses, everyone!  I just realized late today that Krispy Kreme is celebrating its 75th birthday in its hometown of Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Vernon Rudolph bought a secret yeast-raised doughnut recipe from a New Orleans pastry chef, and in July 1937, he rented a building in what is now historic Old Salem.  You can read more about Old Salem Here and Here.  He started by selling his creations to local grocery stores, but passersby were attracted by the aroma of the baking doughnuts.  So Rudolph cut a hole in the side of the building and sold his hot glazed doughnuts to customers right on the sidewalk.

When I realized today was the big birthday party, I thought it might make an interesting post; so we grabbed the camera, and off we went to Krispy Kreme.  My husband's car knows the way all by itself; he stops there every Friday morning on his way to work and buys two boxes of doughnuts for his co-workers at the office.  He started this tradition over ten years ago, and if he's going to be on vacation on Friday, he has to take doughnuts on Thursday.  :)  If he's on vacation for a week, one of his co-workers does doughnut duty.  He jokes and says that if you eat the doughnuts while they're hot, they don't have any calories.  "Just three bites and a pleasant memory."

If he happens to be running a few minutes late for work, everyone's waiting at the door like this...

While we waited in line to place our order, we snapped some pics of the doughnuts on the assembly line.

These guys just rolled through a "sheet" of glaze.

Now we're at the glass cases,

and here are some of the selections...

And of course, it would have been unthinkable to leave the birthday celebration without doughnuts.

I can assure you, folks, that I needed a doughnut like the proverbial hole in the head.  But believe it or not, it's the first time I've had a Krispy Kreme in a long time; they're great when they're hot, but they're just a bit too sweety-sweet for me.  Then again...I wouldn't want to be accused of being a party pooper.  ;)

Do you have a Krispy Kreme shop in your town?  If so, you might want to have a celebratory doughnut.  I'm joining the crowd at Seasonal Sundays, hosted by The Tablescaper, Sunny Simple Sundays, hosted by Elaine at Sunny Simple Life, and Mosaic Mondays, hosted by Mary at Little Red House.

As always, thank you for visiting me at my humble little blog.  I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  2. Hi Denise, I'm now following you on Linky. It's a good thing that KK is about 17 miles from my door. Rarely, are we on the street it is on, when that light is blinking. When it is...you know the car automatically tries to turn in. Ha! My husband and I have found that the rolls at Logan's Roadhouse, when not so browned and hot out of the oven, actually taste like the KK's. Seriously, they do and they come with the meal!:) Hope you visit and follow me. Helen

  4. Krispy Kreme opened up in Manhattan more than 10 years, maybe 13 yrs, and I actually drove in from Staten Island early on a Sunday morning to get them and brought several dozen to the rehab where my mom was. Everyone loved them. I felt they were too sweet as well. One time a friend brought me some from Florida. I can get them in a couple of places here, one is a gas station which freaks me out a little (all the fumes!) and a deli way over on the other side of the island. We have Dunkin' Donuts practically one on every block. xo

  10. I've never really eaten donuts much but when Krispy Kreme reached our parts several years ago, I indulged in the heavenly decadence of one. An interesting post with their history.

  12. We don't have Krispy Kreams but we do have Tim Hortons. I've tried KK's and they are delicious - so I'm glad they are far away! Quite often people will bring back a box from a trip south of the border - then they're pretty popular!

  14. Oh This Is So Not Fair! It is early morning and there is not even a small town donut shoppe near me. Hmmm. I will have to take my father-in-law to the one near him today. They are the BEST donuts, melt in your mouth grease, sugar and all and I would never complain;') The images are great~

  18. This is an interesting post on a yummy topic. I think I have only ever had one Krispy Kreme donut as they aren't available where we live in Canada. I think they are in some cities now. Great post!

  19. Well good grief! How did I miss this post earlier? It's so... appetizing! I'm impressed with your husband if he can slow it down to THREE bites.

    Just sayin'...

I do love KK doughnuts because of the way they melt in the mouth. Like you, they are too sweet for me so I haven't had one in years it seems.

Have you seen the recipe that Paula Deen has for bread pudding made with them?
    Oy!
