They Did It Again!

Hooray for Eli and the New York Giants!!

For the second time in five years, they beat the highly ranked New England Patriots to win the Super Bowl.  What an exciting game -- it was a nail-biter down to the very last second!

I have long been a fan of the Manning brothers.  First it was Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts, and then as Eli carved out his place in the world of NFL football, he has also become a favorite.  The thing is, there are lots of good quarterbacks out there.  But what I like about these two brothers is not just their intense love of the game of football and their competitive spirit.  It's also the way they conduct themselves -- on the field and off.  I have respect for the Manning family as a whole (hope I don't get disappointed later down the road).  But in a culture where so many of our celebrities frequently cause us to cringe with shame, it's refreshing to see that some do have a modicum of decency and integrity.  I'll step down from my soapbox now. :)

So now my question for you is:  Do you feel like a sports widow during football, basketball, etc. season, or do you get into the spirit of watching the games with your husband?  I grew up in a house where my dad watched football (college and pro) from the beginning of the season until the grand finale -- the Super Bowl.  So I'm used to watching football, and for the most part, I enjoy it.  We always watched the Olympic Games at our house, too.

But since I've been married, I've added the Tour De France to my list of sporting events I watch on television.  My husband has always liked watching it, and he got me interested, as well.  I mostly watch it for the gorgeous scenery, about three weeks worth of it, in fact.  But after I finally got some understanding of how the big cycling events work, I actually got interested in that aspect as well.  We usually find a favorite, or two, every year and root for them.

And speaking of watching things on TV, I finally managed to get the first two episodes of "Downton Abbey" on Netflix, and I'm already hooked.  I even got the hubby to watch with me; can't wait for the next installment.  But we're behind most everyone else in watching the series, so I hope I don't get too many spoilers before we can catch up.

Thank you for your visit and have a great day!

  1. Congrats to Eli and the whole team! We watched at a neighbor's house, and it was a nail biter all the way to the end! Commercials were pretty fun, too! I've never been a fan of the Patriots' coach, so this was an especially sweet victory in my book!

  2. Yes, way to go Big Blue! I admit I don't really understand the game, but I do enjoy all the hype, commercials and half-time show. When it is a NY team I can't help but get into it! Of course there are all the good snacks too :) xo

  3. I was rooting for the Giants. Not because I like or even understand football, but because I like the story of the Mannings and therefore picked them. I think it's wonderful that their dad was a gifted player in the NFL, and two of his sons followed suit. I think I heard that they have another brother who is a doctor. I'd say Archie Manning must be one proud Papa.

I'm a totally sports widow. I neither like nor understand sports so we go our separate ways often. His major thing is baseball. I can pretty much lure him away from other things, but not his Braves. Oh. No.

  4. Ok. As a devout Broncos fan, we had to root for the Giants. I dabble a bit in football, and am not a football widow, but we do enjoy a good game, and this year's Super Bowl was so good. Let's see what those Broncos can do next year.

  5. We were rooting for the Giants at our house. In fact, everyone at our party was! I just love Eli.
So funny... I watch the tour de France for the scenery too. I thought I was the only one. And I am so looking forward to the olympics! I prefer the winter games, but I just love everything about the Olympics. EVERYTHING!

I have to confess.... I sat and watched ALL 7 episodes of the first Season of Downton Abbey yesterday. I just had to see what all the hype was about. I was hooked and luckily I had nothing to do all day. I should be caught up with the regular season soon.

  6. I am not a big football fan, but my great aunt was married to a Mara, and there has always been a family connection.
Glad they won, but I was watching DA while it was on.
When I was sick after Cmas, they reran the whole first season. I watched the whole thing. Amazing as I had never heard of it! Of course I am hooked, can't wait till Sunday night!
